Whether you’re a

don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to help!
We’ve all heard the basics: board up the windows, secure
loose items outside, and grab your hurricane supplies. But what about some
other ways to protect your home that you might not have thought of?
NOTE: To obtain information follow the Hurricane Milton Florida Emergency Management Division of Management updates here.
Here are a few ideas
that go beyond the typical storm prep:
Elevate Your Furniture
Got some low furniture in flood-prone areas? Grab some
cinder blocks or even sturdy furniture risers and lift them up. Elevating
things like couches or entertainment centers can help keep them dry if water
creeps inside. It's a quick and easy way to save yourself some trouble if
flooding happens.
Wrap Your HVAC and Water Heater
We don’t usually think about protecting things like our
water heater or HVAC units, but they’re vulnerable in a storm too. Cover them
up with a heavy-duty tarp to keep them safe from wind and debris. If you can,
raise them on a platform to avoid flood damage.
DIY Water Diversion
If your yard tends to pool water, consider creating a DIY
system to guide that rainwater away from your home. A tarp, PVC pipe, or even
drain hoses can work wonders in redirecting water. You’d be surprised what a
little creativity can do to prevent a flooded yard—or worse, a flooded house.
Turn Off and Drain Your Water Supply
One thing people often overlook is their water system.
Before the storm hits, consider turning off the main water supply and draining
the pipes. This can help prevent burst pipes from the fluctuating pressure that
sometimes happens during storms, especially if winds get really high.
Use Pool Noodles for Door Gaps
Yes, you read that right—pool noodles. They aren’t just for
the pool! Cut them lengthwise and wedge them under doors or in window gaps to
help slow down water from seeping in. They’re cheap, easy to use, and can
really help reduce the amount of water getting into your home.
