Six Weeks Before Moving
1. Research and hire a reputable moving company or decide on a DIY move.
2. Create a budget for your move, including costs for packing materials, moving services, and other expenses.
3. Start decluttering your home by selling, donating, or disposing of items you no longer need.
4. Begin collecting moving supplies such as boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and markers.
5. Notify your landlord or real estate agent of your move-out date if you're renting.
6. Arrange for any necessary time off from work on moving day.
7. Research schools, healthcare providers, and other essential services in your new area.
8. Obtain moving insurance if necessary.
9. Fill out a USPS Change of Address Form.
10. Create a folder to keep all moving-related documents organized.
Four Weeks Before Moving
1. Confirm the moving date and details with your chosen moving company.
2. Start packing non-essential items, labeling boxes by room for easy unpacking.
3. Notify utilities companies (electricity, water, gas, internet, etc.) of your move-out date and schedule disconnection/connection at both locations.
4. Change your address with the USPS and update it with banks, credit card companies, subscriptions, and other important accounts.
5. Arrange for transportation for pets and plants if needed.
6. Schedule a cleaning service for your old home if required by your lease or for the new homeowners.
7. Transfer or close bank accounts if necessary.
8. Make travel arrangements if you're moving long-distance or internationally.
Two Weeks Before Moving
1. Pack a suitcase with essentials for the first few days in your new home.
2. Confirm details with the moving company, including parking, elevator access, and any specific instructions.
3. Confirm travel arrangements for yourself and your family, including accommodations if needed.
4. Finish packing non-essential items and begin packing essential items.
5. Dispose of hazardous materials properly.
6. Return borrowed items and retrieve any loaned items.
7. Arrange for childcare or pet care on moving day if necessary.
8. Notify friends, family, and important contacts of your new address and contact information.
One Week Before Moving
1. Confirm details with the moving company one last time.
2. Defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer.
3. Finish packing, labeling boxes clearly.
4. Disassemble furniture as needed and pack hardware in labeled bags.
5. Gather important documents such as passports, birth certificates, and medical records in a safe place.
6. Confirm key exchange and access to your new home.
7. Confirm utility connections at your new home.
8. Set aside valuables and important items to transport yourself.
9. Pack a box of essentials for moving day and the first night in your new home.
Moving Day
